What's the difference between automation and an AI agent?

Traditional automation follows rules and conditions defined deterministically. An AI agent can interpret language, choose among available tools, and handle less structured input. When the rule is simple and certain, classic automation is often better; the agent is useful when you need context understanding or a choice between multiple paths.
